A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, unlike CT, does not use X-rays but a strong magnetic field to create images. The technique is mainly used to image soft tissue thanks to high contrast capabilities. MRI is especially indicated for neurological screening or symptoms or detecting tendon and muscle injuries.
The examination takes about 60 minutes, so the patient is always put under full anesthesia.

Referring a patient for MRI
It is possible to refer a patient only for an MRI examination. This is only possible for stable patients.
Please make an appointment by phone through the secretariat of the Small Animal Clinic (T 09 264 77 00).
On the day of the appointment, the patient is expected between 8 and 9 a.m. in the morning. The animal can go home from 3:30 p.m. onwards. Exceptionally, other times can be discussed. No results are discussed with the owner at pick-up. We will provide you with a comprehensive report within 3 days.
Screening for Syringomyelia and Chiari-like malformation is also possible. In a first step, you provide us with a referral letter stating which region or regions you want an MRI scan from and what the indication is. You also provide us with the results of a recent blood and urine test (if applicable). This can be done via an online contact form or via email to dierenradiologie@ugent.be. We will review the file and return an email to you with confirmation, or if necessary, requesting additional information. After receiving our confirmation, the owner can make an appointment by phone through the secretary's office of the Small Animal Clinic (T 09 264 77 00).
