Ultrasound is a technique in which soft tissue and bony surfaces can be examined by means of sound waves. The best-known uses of ultrasound are the examination of the abdomen and of the heart (echocardiography), but ultrasound can also be used to examine the eyes, joints, tendons and the bone surface. Every day, under ultrasound guidance, we also take tissue samples of affected organs to obtain an exact diagnosis.
An ultrasound examination takes between 20 and 30 minutes. The area to be examined is shaved before ultrasound. A water-based gel is then applied to take the ultrasound. The gel is removed after the examination. Any residue is not dangerous to your animal.
To ensure the safety of both patient and examiner, ultrasounds are sometimes performed under sedation.
