Alternative nutrition

Alternative nutrition is a hot topic. In addition to the traditional commercial nutrition, a lot of alternatives are available nowadays, both commercial and homemade, such as:

  • BARF (bone & raw meat food)
  • Ready-made fresh meat
  • Gluten free nutrition
  • Natural nutrition
  • Homemade nutrition
  • Vegetarian nutrition
  • Vegan nutrition
  • Nutrition based on insects

What can you expect from us?

There is a lot of discussion about the effect of nutrition on the general health of cats and dogs. We gladly advise you on the nutritional myths and on scientifically proven methods. Please do not hesitate to contact us to find out more. You can also come to us if you would like to give your pet a sustainable, complete and balanced diet, regardless if you choose a traditional or alternative diet. As the choice is huge, it is not always easy for you, the owner, to make the best choice for your pet.

Would you like to prepare your pet's food yourself?

Let your vet or one of our team members advise you. Cats and dogs have different nutritional needs than humans. Cooking an extra portion or a diet based on table scraps or leftovers can therefore never be a balanced diet for your cat or dog.

Did you know certain ingredients like chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins and products with xylitol can be toxic for your cat or dog?

  • Please fill out the form about the nutritional history and accommodation of the pet (pdf at the bottom of this page) and send it to dienstvoedingkhd@ugent.be
  • We evaluate the current nutrition.
  • We give advice to possibly switch over to a different nutritional product if necessary and always in close consultation with the owner or vet.
  • We make a calculation of the required nutritional quantities based on the individual needs of the pet.
  • We provide regular follow-up and nutritional adjustments if necessary (this might imply extra costs).
